Bean animal overflow for nano3/24/2024 ![]() I attached a pic i made to better explain. i dont care lol I like that its silent and I just want to make one dad gummit! :nerd: I also realize some may think the bean animal system might be a little much for a small nano tank but. Has anybody ever seen/done anything like this before? I realize this post may do better in a reef forum or something but Im not signed up for one of those and I wanted to reach as many people as possible too see if anybody has some answers. It would basically have a normal overflow weir and instead of the pvc there would be small (appropriately sized for flow) boxes made into the shapes of how the pvc Ts and elbows would work to create the different parts of the system. Also, I understand the point youre making about needing the closed loop to be higher than the bean animal feeds but Im worried that by making the overflow itself extremely deep (like 6-8') that I would get a LOT of noise from that thin. ![]() The Herbie method can be done but you should put a balance pipe between the two overflows and return over the tank wall. OK, Ill start with the Bean Overflow, specifically the full siphon drain as this is a limiting part. Any other way and youll get stagnant water in one. Its pretty thin I dont remember the exact measurement, but the idea is to basically have no actual "plumbing" in the tank taking up room. Doing it this way will keep both overflows balanced and water flowing in them. So for the overflow I thought it may be fun to try and build a custom bean animal system out of a spare sheet of acrylic I have. Im putting a sump on it mostly to increase the water volume because its only about 10 gallons. On a bean animal if both the main siphon and the first trickle get clogged the 3rd pipe would be there. I believe the thought process is if your main siphon gets clogged the trickle overflow would take over. All of them can be used with either an internal or external overflow box. These are the three most common water drain technologies you will see used on an aquarium. And put a gate valve on the lowest (full siphon) drain. Ive used a Herbie for a couple of years now with no issues. Durso, Herbie, and BeanAnimal refer to the drain plumbing itself inside the overflow box. ![]() ![]() You would need to plumb in a drain in your overflow about 2 to 3 inches below the second drain pipe. If you wanted to take your return over the top of the tank you could do a bean animal setup pretty easy actually. I am about to drill my tank for beananimal overflow, and I have to know some things before I start. So I have a very unique sized tank (48"x5"x9") That Im planning on turning into a nano river tank for some hill stream loaches and things like that. mrbh22 said: Bean animal requires 3 drain holes. ![]()
